Subject groups/Research projects
I investigate the design of new technologies as a critical technical practice, drawing on the visual and performing arts, and informed by social science and critical theory. I am particularly interested in interrogating "hard" technical topics from a critical perspective, including programming language design, big data analytics, and the internet of things. This programme of research demands serious and rigorous engagement between disciplines, and led to the establishment of the Crucible network for research in interdisciplinary design. Crucible has always had a strategic emphasis on blurring the boundaries between teaching and research, between academia and industry, engaging in the (re)design of the University as a reflexive exercise with direct implications for public value and public policy.
